Autism is a complex developmental disability that affects a personís ability to communicate and interact with other people.  Autism typically appears before the age of three.


Some symptoms include:


- Lack of or delay in spoken language

- Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)

- Little or no eye contact

- Lack of interest in peer relationships

- Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play

- Persistent fixation on parts of objects


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the USA, in 2007, reported that the prevalence for Autism is 1 in 150 children.


Autism is one of five disorders that fall under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD).
